Fr James (Jerome) Watt, O.Carm. RIP

frjeromewatt 450pThe Carmelites of Australia and Timor-Leste are mourning the loss today of Fr James (Jerome) Watt who died peacefully yesterday afternoon. Fr Jerome was 89 years old and had been a Carmelite for 73 years and a priest for 66.

Fr Jerome served in the parishes of Port Melbourne (VIC), Middle Park (VIC), Hilton (WA) and Coorparoo (QLD) where he was renowned for forming deep and lasting relationships with parishioners, especially the elderly and the sick. A qualified Canon Lawyer, Fr Jerome was also involved in the formation of young Carmelites and as a lecturer. He also served on various Diocesan Marriage Tribunals.

Fr Jerome died at St Vincent’s Care (formerly Marycrest), Kangaroo Point (QLD) where he had been a resident for the past 8 years. The Carmelites express our deep appreciation to the carers and medical staff at St Vincent’s for their wonderful care of Fr Jerome during this time.

He was a faithful friend and pastor whose gentleness and sense of humour will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace.
